Notice the survivors on the roof , what you don't see, is people running from the solar panels. After this terrible disaster, those solar panels are ready to make electricity again, once the system has been inspected for damage. No one will be spending time and money pumping sea water on them, so they don't explode.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 248px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzcwKoZlWauhtp0EH3rzYk_1Xj1Hs9YjTOwVFkU8U9SAbV9IhcvbHqfScnHsh76jLQjM4qqd2yFcmm4obX6m8pfBryqDyv_mdJYrPoAFs5Uk_fK69Qo-glm6OWzA8Neds6So__kvwQktA/s400/Picture+63.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583587546815827682" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1470398881874759310.post-77697788927177232472010-07-14T06:27:00.006-05:002010-07-14T11:39:53.414-05:00How to Assemble the Maria Telkes<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKWgahKVtBQ9zpmkk1C97yleCOAa8GEqmNUXaK8-Umy94SQAwZ5433DLFzGXx-AekLfMy6dCxihApq0yf5lBsb6EysxHDZGOIdMKmfOA5v8I0z2g41CL6TmMpkaJ21XOkbEmf-tSqUnf8/s400/IMG_1162.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493727440826282978" />
The Maria Telkes with out her "Bonnet", or reflectors.

Directions on putting Maria together
Hello whoever you are , I'm going to walk you through getting this solar oven unpacked, and set-up to cook with. First off there are parts inside the oven you will need to assemble the "Bonnet", so get everything out of her, once you have removed the packing wrap and tape. In addition, I have included a couple of tools on the skid help you do the step-up. A hammer to take the skid apart, and a pair of adjustable pliers to get the wheels back on. Start by getting all the parts off the skid , don't over look to the two bundles of support rods that are taped on each side of the skid.

This what she looks like with the that step done -

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf8Hk0XoIyyWVYQCsjbARISU_8NCMQ8ZyTMWroCjC3khn1WodMSBIyxreQ7chuco6y_3n4mkwdPS8FiBJXk21pY4PGs86Le5-ym7cb9tnztcsiwHx4qoN_e2wE0PIAPmBRW2QAfb8KCtY/s400/IMG_1460_1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493733362413474098" />

Be sure that the oven is up off the ground at least 14 inches in the rear, so you can get the wheels back on. Remove the nuts off the axles , and the small steel spacer on the axles, and slide the 2 wooden skid rails off the axle. You can now mount the wheels on the axle in this order :
2 flat washers, the wheel, 1 flat washer, the lock washer, and the nut.
The red object between the wheels is the brake, it looks like this :

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw-4g2nMerfuX_FizOJ2byAkBcm5NG_4y9DmfEJl-nBob6EXhBK_eVdwxGiwvmNQGrKcOYbD98geJMYLsgdbT0mz0X_Zycrnqe5k4TW6vsZ4v-FDa2C0vdGYRMTnUuMKqFlDuNB2ifico/s400/IMG_1457.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493740649060414722" />

With the brake on the wheel, and the tow bar all the way down on the ground, you can now begin to install the "Bonnet" parts.
There are 4 main reflector parts, and 8 support rods. These rods will allow 1 person to assemble the "Bonnet" alone, but having 2 people makes it much easier.

There 4 four flanges around the glass seen here :
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGmfOnX0kX8lTlhJQC_jXEMOzBOWIp9mwVm79RVblovg0cITB3ZJh62uWbrqY5YxS1TpTI0hndAxGmvD2rscnG3ba8IVrtB-IjEyJURavoITGkM3er0nKPCbWxHdlK6UexzR9PaXrBypU/s400/IMG_1458.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493747202244539634" />
These flanges can be removed, in order to take the glass out for cleaning, when necessary.
Each reflector has a flange that slips into the space between the glass flanges, and the oven case. This picture shows that using a sheet of paper :
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVeW54ojof1P6nkVMj-F7A5CzDfhiMI-F7oqMjTpJWz3z5UA2RWr14kIZjCzG6jL4PaLgtjfvPKKmE4VwN6nfzHymSZ4F0unVds6g2xOqN7UheMGbSZcuaVqgGK_6FX_GT2NXDY_uJpbI/s400/IMG_1451.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493749377199026498" />
Notice the small "R" on the case, each side is marked , so the right side reflector, and the left side reflector get installed correctly.
Here are the 2 side reflectors they are taped over the glass during shipping :
Note the flanges running along the top, these side into the slot where the paper was in the picture above:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGj7W4PgIumOASxpl49wOa4sCcIfNreE2DUDvhZ5rJQnGR3eO0Pm-xa9U2WZaBdgmZ88bTOXguQUzjn_6ZEDfobSpivoJdR10c1AtyuN78lR1HRsPDHRE0g8cs_I0xdbY6FXqMWBqZ_fs/s400/IMG_1168_1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493753690340121362" />

Here are the top, and bottom reflectors, the top one has a black flange riveted along it's bottom at a right angle. This flange rests on the case of the oven when it's installed, it is the one on the right in this picture. Note the flanges running along the top, these side into the slot where the paper was in the picture above:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF7MN9tnDJ6hyphenhyphen9ntY03-N0eAiLrviy7GyFTbhReAP_aBgp7ipuO59QFuEwt4yrvDF9pUOrNi2w3flSqreOnlf68L7Ydaw5Gcfe4IzFk6Tdgm5MVDMkWwcdmK2MZuBd30-HJYWL31wP2ro/s400/IMG_1167_1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493754757000209314" />

Next install the "Bonnet" rods for the bottom . They are the set that doesn't have a "hooked" pair. There are 2 holes drilled in the bottom frame on each side for the long ones, and "loops" for the shorter set. Note the "loops" at the bottom of the oven case, and that the bends point to the center :

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRxrQX5zJjuENKzQDs1tfWS9_ShyFy8T9gt89_iFI8iPJ6FxYz0DlBKN2TvsaV5mciA3vzdepeTZOjWF9IT0-xGgUFXAA0N2gpptP-C3SOwwbAS1llcP746IdtEgie-28jXnqQCU3_7So/s400/IMG_1456.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493762068253409026" />

The "loops" on the "Bonnet" :

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7tENPFkwrBP39ye00E8y4iv6-lmjort5jAPaPkyKf7oVxY7n42FTm39-vHCKe7ks81lYbPLfQ3m04nxITHxKfahA-jmk_HvPxNfjZTxT0ohVAXo12NEq4YWR9u9CKONicHmSWY_4ngfg/s400/IMG_1453.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493763891314806258" />

You are now ready install the bottom reflector on to the oven case.
Center the reflector flange on the case with the 2 sides folded in. Once you locate it , start one corner down into the slot, (Remember the paper from above ?) This can be worked down , but be patient it's a tight fit. Once the whole flange is seated, swing up the two center rods, and slip them into their "loops". This will support the bottom reflector, this what you're going for :

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN5MbhK9uDFq6p816hq0TvXcEYewUZ19HgksltMKLh6xyV75Bvz3GxnVIcYm9lb3PUh_F-dz7uSGqAkQTLo-sr9wj7Fisc00oCV-V-P1PVvN4maHKcnYLhBgw4sLDn6DF8IA4uF3EbFW4/s400/IMG_1454.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493768949461808050" />

Next install the top reflector, (the one with the black flange) , using the 2 short rods that have "hooked" ends, these hooked ends clip onto the "Bonnet" , with "loop" ends just above the oven door . Again center the reflector left and right on the glass slot, and work one corner into the slot. The 2 long rods have wing nuts that thread into holes drilled the the side frames.

Next install the "Target" in the bottom right corner of the glass. It is inside the oven with the pins used to fasten the reflectors in a plastic sack, it just slips under the glass flanges. This target tells you when the oven is pointing directly at the sun, the idea is not have any shadows at the base of the target :

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqLfx4-wL4pg0llQd6U10QQ6akKhT-8ohC8R25jmt7wvjcYWkeaMme7R1QC_0gj4G-RdpGx7bx5jUQ137r1T3vOReMwPzXn254di70J-BHnlA4h70jDA6CvWpL7MKvQlc5Cedq2hhS6Ao/s400/IMG_1447.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493775225619032962" />

You are now ready to install the sides. Right side in the right side, left in the left. Again center the reflector flange left and right in relation to the glass, and work one corner into the slot between the glass flange, and the oven case. There are 6 hinges on each side that pin the sides to the top and bottom , but only pin the top sets together as you mount each side.
This done so that if the parts aren't "centered" on each side, you can adjust their positions left and right. If every thing lines up, install the other 8 pins in the hinges. The "Bonnet" will now support itself, and the rods can be adjusted if need be. The 4 long rods stick into pockets on each triangle section of the "Bonnet".

(These pins are inside the oven in a plastic sack.)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL6aNNKKnyrhHlsnqLafhYt7lnyfgrrJOxQw3Tri4UPbvdSZFO7WAqX1SeLvtofwjMyGyVzLK7cJjI-VptjSGd3S2Pr7XwCoVGvO87-DMu3sF3Es-a6a15X0PChQyw6eL41IVB0VQhcho/s400/IMG_1449.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493780738105899698" />

You'er just about done, now install the "bonnet clips". There 8 of them in that sack with the target, and pins. These just press down around the lip of the "Bonnet" where each section meets the next. The top "hooked" rods go over these clips.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdad-HkXnk0r5rEEAwqPhVdApd4JBD6vsFL986q_GPwLhNr1CJ7GZbJJzFWU56dWIDIGIhtfOyXfp3WLHwC6xbk8GP3kWU5FKXXHhZwQtwaofy7deImFVMGuG2WCn1MKlQ2b-mg6Und5A/s400/IMG_1448.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493785544528204050" />

With the the clips and rods installed , the "Bonnet" will stand-up to wind pretty good, it can wheeled around from one location to the next, and it can be pointed way over without fear of it losing it's shape.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 120px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiaoStreqGMU0yRDPm5V1XPASB-LSwNXu62YOu-hU87vfjyBOb4_1EMdawgkL85lEdAwLfMwS-7ZJeh7TOfvgJabjqWQ4xMDeGdl3OHEW5pZwO0_IrgDnW1Zxu4Q99pX5aVNf5AkiwkEM/s400/MVI_1221_0001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493790286605790834" />

Odds and ends
I have included a roll of reflective tape for repairs to the reflector. This thing is huge. I really like standing next to it , it's what I call "man sized". 1 guy can manage it. It's been a design rule of mine for a very long time.

Still waiting on the oven gasket to finish out the door.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1470398881874759310.post-65119705826518690842009-06-29T14:24:00.002-05:002009-06-29T14:41:11.357-05:00Reflector Mock - Up.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1470398881874759310.post-5398630135915385702009-06-27T22:46:00.003-05:002009-06-28T00:01:25.264-05:00Making Reflector Parts & Some NumbersThe total surface area of my glass is 700 sq. in. or 4.86 sq feet. That's 25 X 28 inches.
The reflectors are going to be 6,129 sq in. or 42.56 sq feet .
That's 8.82 to 1

That's 47.42 sq feet of total collecting power going into a box that is 10.89 cu. feet. of space.
This also means that I have enough ReFlectec film left over for 2 more ovens. So the $491.00 bill
divided by 3 equals $163.66 in film for the reflector. I bought 3 more sheets of 26 ga. steel.
That's 6 sheets total , of which 5 and a half will go in the oven. They were $33.00 per sheet.

$163.66 in film for the reflector.
$198.00 in sheet steel.
$80.00 in Prodex foil insulation.
$82.00 in rockboard mineral insulation
$23.00 in hinges.
$90.00 for wheels.
$77.00 for steel for frame and axle.
$60.00 for hardware & bits.
$36.00 for tape.
-----------------------
$809.66
I've sure there's a couple of things I've missed but , that number is where I am right now.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1470398881874759310.post-35362022169856168152009-06-27T14:30:00.002-05:002009-06-27T14:38:09.478-05:00Door Fabrication & Flanges for the Glass/ Reflectors

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1
